More Hoopla

Hailey's Halloween Hoopla

Hailey businesses opened their doors last night to trick or treaters, so we met up with some good friends and walked around.  Emily didn't collect a lot of candy...

but she held onto that Snickers in her right hand for quite awhile!

She did love the few flowers that are remaining around town.  We've already had a light snow (that didn't stick) and some chilly days.  

In case you can't tell, Emily was the sun.  "You Are My Sunshine" has been one of our favorite songs, so I thought it was perfect.  She wore it twice to daycare this week since there were 2 costume photo ops to include all the kids.  It was a bonus that it was such an original costume, and I have to say she made a great sun with all those smiles and giggles.  

Things that go bump...

Look above Emily's right eye, you can see the bruise but not the bump.  She got her first fabulous forehead bump this week when she tripped too close to a chair, nailing her forehead on the chair leg.  Her arms just couldn't help her this time.

First Best Friends

Emily loves the dogs.  She can "pat-pat the doggie" and "give hugs", not to mention she says something that sounds a lot like doggie.

Sometimes...

You're going to have a bad week.

Sometimes you're going to have a reaction to your medication (amoxicillin) and break out in a rash all over your stomach, back, and face and then not get to go to daycare until you go to ANOTHER doctor visit just to make sure it's that and not something else.  

Sometimes you'll want to stay at Dad's store longer than Mom wants you to because she's tired of putting all the things back on the shelf that you've taken off.  It's like when you go to the grocery store and you really want to walk instead of ride in the cart, but Mom doesn't want to buy every single item on the bottom shelf and you get mad when you have to leave it behind.

Sometimes you'll be cutting 4 teeth at once, and it hurts, and everything seems worse than it really is.  

Sometimes you are going to have a bad day.  But then it will always get better.

Pumpkin Patch

It was a rainy day, but we went to the Farmstead Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze in Boise on Saturday.

First, Emily had to pick out the perfect pumpkins.  Then we went through the corn maze, where she tried to walk, but at her speed we would have never made it through.  I carried her while Aaron pushed the stroller, which had turned into our pumpkin cart, while reading the map.  We ended our day in the corn pit where we played with kernels of corn.

Another weekend

Who doesn't love a warm October day?  Emily loves to investigate the flowers beside the house.

But, mostly, it was just a lazy weekend.

Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day

There are days for presidents and heros.  There are days for friendship and love.  There are the bizarre and crazy daily observances that celebrate every food, hobby, or characteristic that you can imagine.

I hate, hate, hate that there has to be a day for infant loss.
Or maybe I just hate the fact that I have to know about it.

So, tonight at 7 we will light a candle.  Not only for Nadia, but for
my cousin, Chuck,
Carter,
Kylee (Happy 11th Birthday tomorrow),
Daniel,
Allison,
 Logan,
and for all my friends that know loss before they even got to know their baby.

And if you won't be home, or don't have a candle, or just plain forget, it's okay with me.  Just think of Nadia every now and then, remember that every time you notice Emily's big, blue eyes or grand toothy smile, that there are supposed to be two Hughston girls.

15 month well check

Emily weighs 22 pounds, 7 ounces and is 30 inches long.  She also has a sinus infection (FYI, we did go to the clinic twice this month...) but at least we are starting drugs today that will (hopefully) clear her up.

Our pediatrician is really quite pleased with Emily's progress.  She even commented that she is losing her preemie look.  The neonatologists and NICU staff discuss a lot with you how your preemie will probably look different.  I realized the truth to that statement when we attended the graduate picnic this past August, but I just don't see it in Emily.  But as a preventative measure, we are going to start speech therapy with Emily the next time we go to physical therapy.  It just may be that the therapist will evaluate her and decided not to continue, but since most preemies end up needing it at some point, and Emily is full of things to say just not in a way we can understand, we're going to go ahead and start.

Emily got three shots. Including the flu shot.  And she didn't even cry.  Amazing kid.

We're going to skip whole milk and try soy instead.  And we also are going to try peanut butter.  Fun times.

And in celebration, we flipped the carseat around so she can watch the world go by in the right direction.  I think she was a little confused, at first.

But after eating dinner out and a run through Target, she was exhausted.  Check out those fists.  Not so sure what that was all about!

Lazy Sunday

Just pondering

Enough already!

Poor Emily has had a runny nose and cough for days, no, make that weeks. Like since my school year started...  Please tell me her immunity is going to kick into overdrive and she'll dry up soon!

We went to her monthly therapy appointment last Monday.  Her PT was pretty impressed with her walking (although she did comment that she didn't stand up straight while she did it - ha ha, are you KIDDING me?)  and we left with five new goals - kicking a ball, throwing overhand, stacking, using a shape sorter, going down the stairs.
I did mention that I wasn't so sure about teaching her to kick and throw.

I know it's not a shape sorter, really, but it is putting a sphere into a place where it fits, so I'm counting it as a goal in progress.  :)

"Hug G"
Emily still isn't talking a lot, but she is showing signs of understanding what you are saying to her. At daycare she's starting to recognize kids and when our provider tells her to look for so-and-so, she's getting the idea of looking for that kiddo.  And yesterday you could tell Emily to hug G and she would lean over and put her head on Gerda.  Pretty darn cute.

Emily really likes to open and close things - doors, cabinets, her toys, and the wipes container.  Guess she figured out that there's more to the wipes than just open and close.

Another thing Emily really likes is water.  Here she is at a little fishing pond north of Ketchum on Saturday.
